Learning Journey

Module 2 covers the effect of obesity and diabetes on CVD. Even if you do NOT have diabetes at this point in time, there is a greater risk for you to become diabetic as a result of having CVD, obesity in itself is also an independent risk factor for CVD and will compromise treatment and successful management of CVD if this issue is not addressed.

Carrying excessive body fat aggravates all the modifiable risk factors associated with CVD like

  • LDL- and HDL-cholesterol levels, clotting factors and the accumulation of fats in the blood (triglycerides).
  • Excess glucose in the blood will cause damage to the blood vessels, create more inflammation and will completely sabotage all efforts to treat CVD if glucose levels are not normalised as quickly as possible.
