Prevalence and Epidemiology of Hypertension in South Africa

According to WHO, approximately 27.4% of men and 26.1% of women in South Africa have high blood pressure. Since high blood pressure has been identified as being one of the most significant risk factors in the development of cardiovascular disease, it is with extreme concern that we view these statistics. Similar numbers are found in other low to middle income countries, suggesting that poor food choices, lack of education and inadequate health care could contribute to this dilemma.
