What should your blood glucose targets be?

As an individual who has been diagnosed with diabetes, your immediate task is to set your goals for what your blood glucose levels should be. Even though the normal blood glucose level (for a non-diabetic individual) is between 4 mmol/L and 6 mmol/L before meals and between 4 mmol/L and 7.8 mmol/L 2 hours after a meal, your own targets may differ from these levels.

You will need to get some guidance from your doctor or diabetes educator as to what your short-term and long-term blood glucose targets should be. The following table is a guideline, however, you may need to adjust your targets depending on how far away your current levels are.
